Driver, Lifestyle Enrichment for Senior Adults Program (LESA)

Summary:
The LESA Program hosts a Senior’s Group every Thursday and an Outing one Wednesday each month. These activities are designed to reduce isolation for seniors who have addiction challenges, e.g. alcohol, drugs, gambling.

A volunteer driver program is being piloted, beginning with the monthly outings. This program is designed to improve access to services by clients who experience transportation challenges and who would otherwise not participate in the activities. Drivers are required to pick up one or two clients from various parts of the city and bring them to the Centre, and then pick up the clients at the Centre at the end of the activity and drive them home. There is the option to volunteer or accompany clients on the monthly Outings.

Once the volunteer driver program for the outings has been established, it may be extended to the weekly Senior’s Group.

Major Responsibilities:
Once the coordinator calls with details:

  1. Contact the client a day before the pick up to confirm times/location.
  2. Provide assistance when necessary to the client when getting in and out of the vehicle.
  3. Communicate with the coordinator any concerns.
  4. Record mileage and volunteer hours. Return record at the end of the month.

Qualifications:
Essential:

  • Valid driver’s license, own vehicle, insurance (minimum of $1M liability coverage) and a driver’s abstract
  • Police records check
  • Ability to offer minimal physical assistance to clients, if required
  • Good communication and listening skills
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Patience and empathy
  • Able to commit for at least a 6-month period
  • Available to drive on Thursdays between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Desirable:

  • Reside in the Centretown area
  • $2M liability coverage
  • Ability to offer emotional support
