About the Role
The Community Developer is responsible for working with community members in the Centretown Community Health Centre (CCHC) catchment area on issues that affect their health and well-being, with particular attention to older adults and newcomers. These issues include determinants of health such as poverty, housing and social isolation. The Community Developer builds networks and works with partners (community groups and organizations) to identify needs and capacities, develop strategies and implement action. Strategies include community organizing, community networking, community network and coalition building and advocacy.
Master level degree in health or social science, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in community development.
Demonstrated working knowledge of community development including an understanding of the interactive relationship of the personal and the socio-political determinants of health.
Knowledge and experience in needs assessments and program evaluation.
Demonstrated ability to work with community groups to support self-help.
Experience working with people on low income.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with specific expertise in group facilitation.
Experience in political lobbying and advocacy.
Ability to work well independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
Experience working with a marginalized groups, specifically older adults and newcomers.
Experience working with a variety of community issues, e.g. employment, housing, social isolation, service accessibility, food security, mental health, safety, etc.
Intermediate to advanced computer skills (MS Word, Outlook, Excel and internet).
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
Organizational skills including time management.
Sound judgement and strong problem solving skills.
The ability to communicate in a third language is a definite asset (e.g., Arabic, Mandarin, Somali or Spanish).
