About the Role
The Community Health Worker (LGBTQIA+ Newcomer Program) provides group education and facilitation, advocacy, administrative support, and system navigation for LGBTQIA+ newcomers ages 18 years and over. This includes asylum seekers and refugees in the Ottawa area who face systemic barriers in the process of seeking safety in Canada based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
The CHW works collaboratively with the Health Promoter (LGBTQIA+ Newcomer Program) and key CCHC staff/teams as well as allied community partners to provide the various supports on a group and individual basis.
Requirements
Completed undergraduate degree in Social Sciences, Health Sciences, Social Work, Education or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Minimum three (3) years relevant community experience.
In-depth knowledge of and/or lived experience of immigration and asylum seeking processes / Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada processes
Knowledge of LGBTQIA+ resources and supports for LGBTQIA+ asylum seekers, refugees and newcomers in Ottawa
Demonstrated ability to facilitate workshops / groups; experience planning and facilitating workshops and group programs/projects focused on health and wellbeing for LGBTQIA+ asylum seekers, refugees, and newcomers.
Demonstrated understanding of anti-racism/anti-oppression perspectives and intersection of immigration status and sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of LGBTQIA+ affirming frameworks, resources and supports, social determinants of health of LGBTQIA+ Newcomers
Experience working directly with LGBTQIA+ asylum seekers, refugees, newcomers and/or low-income, multi-racial and multi-lingual populations in a community based organization
Demonstrated ability to work independently and across multidisciplinary teams
Effective verbal and written communication skills in French and English
Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with challenging situations, maintain healthy boundaries and exhibit sound judgement
Familiar with data collection methods and evaluation.
Intermediate to advanced computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite and Electronic Medical Records
Excellent judgement and takes initiative
Effective time management skills
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
Desirable
Lived experience as a racialized person and knowledge of systemic oppression such as homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, heterosexism, cissexism and racism
Awareness of Ottawa area LGBTQIA+ community groups and services
Experience advocating for LGBTQIA+ inclusion
Knowledge of SOGIE (diverse sexual orientations and gender identities and expressions)
Ability to communicate in a language other than English or French
