Updated Letter to Neighbours: Concerns about gatherings in front of CCHC

Updated: 3 hours ago

We have updated our letter addressing the increasing feedback and concerns we have received about the noticeable change, and increase of people gathering in front, and around Centretown Community Health Centre (CCHC). We appreciate hearing from our community members so that we can continue to improve our services. Dear Colleagues, Patients, Clients, and Neighbours,

We would like to acknowledge the ongoing concerns and feedback we continue to receive regarding the noticeable increase in people gathering in front of and around Centretown Community Health Centre (CCHC). We value hearing from our community members and appreciate the opportunity to continue improving our services and our shared community environment.

CCHC provides a wide range of programs and supports to diverse populations across our community. Our staff work diligently to ensure that everyone who visits the Centre feels welcome, respected, and able to access the care and support they need.

Ottawa continues to face significant challenges related to homelessness, substance use, mental health, and the ongoing overdose crisis. Despite the tireless efforts of many community organizations and service providers, there are still not enough resources available to meet the growing needs of vulnerable individuals.

As a result, many people continue to seek safe spaces where they can access food, washrooms, shelter from the elements, rest, and support services. Many individuals gather near CCHC because they feel safe here. They know that if they require assistance, including emergency overdose response, support is nearby and staff will respond quickly. In several instances, potentially fatal overdoses have been reversed because individuals were close to the Centre rather than isolated and alone.

At the same time, we recognize and understand the concerns expressed by neighbours, patients, clients, and community members regarding noise, open substance use, disruptive behaviour, critical incidents, and personal safety. We understand that these gatherings are not a long-term solution to these complex community issues.

CCHC remains committed to maintaining a safe, welcoming, and respectful environment for everyone. We continue to work closely with individuals who spend time around the Centre to strengthen relationships and improve connections to available services and supports. We are working hard to ensure that the front entrance way stays clear, to allow safe access for all. We will be repainting our front pillars this summer with strong, community oriented, inclusive words, and artwork.

We have expanded the involvement of PEER workers in service planning and delivery, by increasing our community clean up to five days, a week, and incorporating peer facilitators to help oversee the program in progress. Their lived experience and insight help inform practical, compassionate approaches that support both community safety and client wellbeing. In addition, teams across CCHC are working on ways to improve safe access to programs and services, including programs for children and families. This includes looking at practical steps to help clients, families, staff, and community members feel safe and supported when coming to the Centre, while continuing to provide compassionate and inclusive care.

Through ongoing engagement, we hope to encourage greater accountability and mutual respect for the Centre, the surrounding neighbourhood, and everyone who accesses our services and supports. We also continue to collaborate with partner agencies, the City of Ottawa, Ottawa Police Service, and municipal and provincial representatives to advocate for more sustainable, long-term solutions that support a safe and healthy community for all.

Centretown Community Health Centre remains committed to maintaining a safe and welcoming space for everyone.

We appreciate your patience, understanding, and continued support during these ongoing challenges. We encourage community members to continue sharing ideas, concerns, and feedback so that we can better understand community needs and work together toward positive change.

Please direct concerns or feedback to complaints@centretownchc.org.

Yours sincerely,

Michelle Hurtubise
